Waiting for the Air Pacific plane

from w.
Last night I noticed that people waiting at Tullamarine,(Melbourne) for the Air Pacific plane from Fiji seemed to be quiet, isolated, not talking to strangers, just standing there at the barrier waiting an hour as their relative/friend went through customs etc. At least the planes seem to be full and tourists are still going to Fiji.

I think at Nadi airport it may be different. People talk to one another whether family, friends, or strangers. Or has Fiji changed and people no longer smile and say hi with small talk?

And some people in Fiji just wait in their homes hoping their kin with one day return from working in security in places like Iraq.

I like to think that the famous Fijian smile will not disappear that easily. :)

Nice sketches. In a lot of airports, security measures have taken a lot of the fun out being there. Some countries are worse than others. The USA turns their airports into "gulags" , places like Japan get the security job done with a minimum of friction - as they do everything.

Airports should be fun, happy places.

Security slows down the queues as everyone is asked 'Have you got scissors in your bag?' etc. but it's not too bad at Melbourne or Nadi.
There's sometimes a lot of emotion at airports - new migrants arriving to be greeted by a huddle of relatives, sometimes a sad occasion with people dressed in black, but it's mostly tourists and business people.
